Planning details for winter camping/ice climbing

Ivo said

"Besides next weekend, I'm free on all the remaining ones. The camping/ice-climbing trip can be done in one of the following locations, depending on snow and ice conditions:K-country - there's a bunch of nice and easy climbs in the immediate surrounding of the Mt Kidd camping ground Banff - again, relatively close to town there are a couple of good places + Lake Louise which has few nice and not so easy climbsYoho - few nice climbs on the Yoho valley road going to Takakkaw fallsIcefields parkway - if everything else is not acceptable - plenty of climbs and snow, as well as camping grounds along the road so we can pick one easily Have a good one and let me know where and when the majority wants to go climbing."

Date - Tentatively set for the weekend of March 17

Please post your comment to indicate your interest and availability.

Activities - Janice is out for another 4 weeks, there is no way I can go ice climbing .....

Apparently one-armed climbing is possible. We're all gonna be ice climbing that weekend :)

Do we want to do car camping or backpacking?

Here's one possible place, but I don't know if it is car or walk-in I have a feeling it is car camping.

Monarch Campground

Open April 30 - May 11 and June 1 - September 3, 2007
Located on the Yoho Valley Road, 3 km east of the Town of Field and within walking distance of Kicking Horse Campground.
Wheelchair accessible washrooms, kitchen shelter with wood stove.
The 46 sites are located in a big meadow.

Winter camping available from October 7 to April 30, 2007

Please bring your own water.

Visitor Information

Backcountry camping

Random camping is permitted beyond 5 km from pavement. Glacier has three designated backcountry campsites on the Bald Hills, above the Copperstain Trail: Copperstain Pass, Caribou Pass and 20-mile. Each has tent pads and food storage poles to place food out of reach of bears. Open fires are not permitted in the backcountry. Backcountry campers require a Wilderness Pass. The Wilderness Pass is available at $9.00/person/night.

Winter Camping
There is no formally maintained winter campsite in Glacier National Park. Road access to our summer campgrounds is unploughed and unmaintained during winter. Anyone wishing to camp in winter should check at the Rogers Pass Centre or contact us.

Random Wilderness Camping, Backcountry Camping, Huts

Designated Back Country Camping
Tent pads accomodate small backpacking tents only. You are only permitted to pitch one tent per site. Wilderness passes are required, they are obtainable from the Field office. If you are mountaineering or climbing, it's more than a good idea to fill out a Voluntary Safety Registration Form. If you do, keep in mind that, by law it must be return at the end of your trip.

( Yoho Trail & Camping Map )

McArthur Creek
10 Campsites, 3 of which can be reserved. The area has pit toilets and bear poles. The campsite is located off of the Ottertail Trail in the southern section of the park on the way to Goodsir Pass which will bring you into Kootenay.

Float Creek
4 Campsites, 2 of which can be reserved. There is a bear pole but no toilets so you'll have to bring a trowl. Float creek is located off of the Ottertail Trail. It is the first camping area you'll encounter if you've entered the trail from highway 1 in the south of the park.

Yoho Lake
8 Campsites, with 2 that can be reserved. There is a bear pole as well as pit toilets. The campsites are located off the beautiful Iceline trail, between the Yoho Valley Road (opens in mid-June) and Yoho Pass in the northern section of the park not far from the Whisky Jack Hostel.

Laughing Falls
8 Campsites, 2 can be reserved. The area has pit toilets and bear poles. The designate area is off the trail at the end of the Yoho Valley Road (opens in mid-june) which follows the Yoho River in the northern section of the park. The site is not far from the Whisky Jack Hostel.

Twin Falls
8 Campsites, 2 of which can be reserved. There is a bear pole as well as pit toilets. The campsites are just below the Wapta Glacier, off the trail which starts at the end of Yoho Valley Road (opens in mid-june) in the northern section of the park.

Little Yoho
10 Campsites, 3 can be reserved. The area has bear poles and pit toilets.

Random Wilderness Camping

No trace camping should be practiced, fires are not permitted in the parks backcountry, so a backpacking stove is essential.
Sites should be chosen carefully to avoid excessive impact. Choose an area well off the road, away from water and the trail. The park has stringent guidelines which you should inquire about. All food must be hung properly to avoid problems with bears.
When you're planning your trip, keep in mind that there is a limit on the number of nights you can camp at any one spot.

There are four random camping areas in the wilderness, Otterhead, Amiskwi and Ice River and Porcupine Valleys.

Hi Janice,

The snow and ice conditions are deteriorating rapidly due to the warm temperatures. You may still find enough snow to build a quinzee at higher elevations, perhaps in the Lake Louise/ Yoho vicinity.

I implore you to check the local avalanche conditions and weather conditions before heading out.

The avalanche reports for all of the area that you listed can be found at: www.avalanche.ca

Towards the bottom of the page on the Kananaskis Country avalanche report there are “Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scales” for common backcountry and ice climbing routes.

A similar ice climbing avalanche exposure scale for the national parks can be founds at: http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/bc/yoho/visit/visit7a12_E.asp

For more information on Kananaskis Country, please contact Barrier Lake Information Centre in Kananaskis Country at (403) 673-3985.

The Lake Louise Visitor Information Centre can be contacted at: (403) 522-3833.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
